Appropriate clothing, tools and installation procedures must be used when installing any underfloor insulation. Saftey procedures related to electrical wiring, working in confined spaces, dust and other possible problems need to be adhered to.
Underfloor insulation is probably not as big a heat and energy saver as ceiling and wall insulation, however insulating floors does constribute a warmer house during winter months and given appropraite access can be fairly simple to have installed.
Underfloor insulation can perform two tasks
- lessen heat loss
although heat loss through floors is not as great as other heat loss areas, by placing insullation under floors you can easily add to the overall efficiency of home insullation
- help stop drafts through cracks and joins in timber floors.
drafts are a major cause of heat loss, underfloor insulation can go a long way to prevent drafts

Installing underfloor insulation
- Consult with your local council for details of any building regulations relating to underfloor insulation.
- Obtain at least 3 quotes from reputable installers and discuss options and benefits of particular under floor insulation products in relation to you particular home and insulation requirements.
- Consider ease of access. Depending on the product underfloor insulation can be easy to install given appropriate access. About 400mm -500mm gap between floor and ground is usually good access, any less and the job becomes more difficult, especially.
- Safety concerns need to be considered, electical wires are located under most floors so precautions need to be taken. We recommend using a suitably qualified and experinced contracter who uses appropriate tools and techniques.
